File a claim.

You can save time (and possibly make money) when you are prepared for a potential property claim that is covered by your Home or Business Insurance. Documenting information on your property and keeping important documents secure will make filing any claim go more smoothly.

1. Make a complete list of all major appliance and furniture items in your home (or business?). Include the brand name, model number, date and place of purchase, purchase price and estimated replacement cost.
2. Take pictures of valuables.
3. Keep duplicate copies of important papers and records in a separate location.
4. Keep records of any above-normal expenses you may incur as a result of the claim. Many policies provide at least partial reimbursement for such expenses as room and board (up to a stated amount), temporary repairs, and removal of debris. Your Marcum & Associates agent can tell you what help to expect.

1. Get as much information as possible about any accident that you are involved in. Do everything possible at the accident scene to prevent fraud.
1. Call the police to report any accident, no matter how small, and get a police report with the officer's name. If the report describes the damage as a small dent, a criminal would have a difficult time collecting a larger claim by intentionally damaging the car.
2. Report the accident to your insurance company (or to your agent at Marcum & Associates) as quickly as possible, whether or not you were at fault.
3. Record the names, addresses, license plate and driver's license numbers as well as the names of witnesses or any other important information immediately.
2. If you are involved in an automobile accident, be aware of possible insurance fraud situations, and help prevent them from happening.
1. The National Insurance Crime Bureau suggests that all drivers keep a disposable camera in their cars to document any accident damage and the number of passengers in all involved vehicles.
2. Prevent accidents from happening by avoiding tailgating and maintaining plenty of distance between your car and the one ahead of you.
3. Avoid people who suddenly appear at the accident scene and try to send you to doctors or lawyers. They may be part of a criminal ploy.
4. Be wary of doctors who try to get you to file a personal injury claim after an accident, especially if you haven't been hurt.
